Digital can make projects faster, bring better value and deliver a better building, if technology is used well. Working out how to make best use of the technology for your project though isn’t easy. Getting the benefits is usually not just a case of using mature technology. The technology is evolving, and to get the most from digital requires changes to how people work, to commercial incentives and increased collaboration in the supply-chain.

This publication is a collected view, from multiple companies of what the best use of digital in design, construction and infrastructure looks like. It comes from many projects, in many countries, and represents hard won lessons about how to use technology and data to make better built assets.

This is not future gazing, everything we describe here is tried, tested and works.
We hope that this provides a useful guide to anyone starting a major construction project.

Digital technology and data are changing how major construction is planned, designed, project managed, built and maintained.

At every stage of the construction lifecycle, new technology and ways of working can improve how things are done, leading ultimately, to better buildings and infrastructure as well as more successful projects with fewer risks and overruns. Understanding the new… Read More

At every stage of the construction lifecycle, new technology and ways of working can improve how things are done, leading ultimately, to better buildings and infrastructure as well as more successful projects with fewer risks and overruns.

Understanding the new emerging art and science of digital construction is important to the owners of construction programmes, as it has implications for how you make decisions, run your projects and procure the services you need.

As I talk to construction customers, I find that people can be confused by some of the hype, and unclear on what the real-life benefits are, what works and what doesn’t work yet.

As a customer, you don’t need to be an expert on digital construction, but you do need to know enough to ask the right questions from your advisors and suppliers, to have a sense of the benefits and to make use of digital construction to make your project successful.

I therefore have pulled together a set of experts to contribute to this publication who understand digital construction in practice. This group includes architects, engineers, project managers, facility managers, smart infrastructure specialists and digital construction tech specialists working in the UK, Germany and Middle East on major projects including buildings and infrastructure such as roads and rail.
